B-day and The Alchemist (Book)
On the 5th of September I had my 24th birthday. Actually I know there is no cultural or custumary significance toward achieving this milestone but it served to be a very important day for me. Since the beginning of this year I set my New Years Resolutions pretty high and after I moved to South Korea I have completed the entire checklist:
2010 New Years Resolutions
- Read 10 new books
- Lose 20 pounds by December
- Start eating healthier
- Find a new job
- Move out of Las Cruces
- Brush up on your French
- Start studying a new Language
Thanks to the fact that I live in an isolated area within South Korea I have made great leaps and bounds toward achieving every goal on the list. So as to deter any regression in my behavior I wanted my birthday to signify the start of a new list. While I am still editing the list currently I won't post what I already have. Because if I did it would spoil the whole movie and you would stop reading ;) Seriously though, my new list focuses on honing my new resolve and making sure that I purge anything out of my life which will serve as a hindrance toward claiming my bright future. I used the word "purge" not to be abrasive but to show that I am committed to develop a positive environment around me at all times to let others feel the change that elusively dodges description.
I also had a chance to read "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. Why didn't anyone tell me how amazing this book was?! This book has changed my life PERIOD. I think that the reason that this book continues to be successful is because of the authors' ability to give relatable anecdotes throughout his writing. Honestly there is bound to be some part of the book that you will say "Oh man, I can totally relate to this character." Although the book is packed full of memorable quotes this was my favorite:
"You must understand that love never keeps a man from pursing his Personal Legend. If he abandons that pursuit, it's because it wasn't true love...the Love that speaks the Language of the World" Coelho 120).
All in all I thought this book came into my life at precisely the right time. I have always felt that I have been a focused and ambitious person. But that was nothing in comparison to how I feel after I read this piece of literature. It's like I went to bed when I was 23 and woke up to be 24 and suddenly Anything and Everything was possible. It's funny because I am constantly trying to shake this feeling to see if it's just a temporary state of mind but it's not going away. So I am happy to announce that my original plan of staying in South Korea has been cancelled. Instead I am making my way back home in March. Not because I don't want to be here anymore, but my heart is telling me that what I am looking for is back in the states.
Chased by a Da$# Dog!
I was going to write a more introspective blog today but ohhh no! Some crazy loose K-9 put an end to that. Normally I keep a pretty strict regiment of running outside several times a week. Yesterday I didn't really want to run but I had some aggro built up from work (A quick shout out to all the bad kids who make my job close to impossible Yay!)
I should have listened to my inside voice but I just thought I was being lazy so I forced myself to hit the streets. During my jog there is this one particular part that is tucked away in a back street and is void of any street lights before I come to main road. And of course it would be fitting for this particular incident to happen while I was in this shoddy little area.
As I was coming up this little "T-Section" I saw two things moving in front of me. The first thing I could make out was a woman, who had just walked into her house. And the second was the silhouette of a large dog. Now being that I am from Los Angeles, being chased by dogs was a part of my school curriculum.
So after I confirmed that it was a dog I immediately stopped running, took my headphones out of my ears, turned, and quietly walked in the other direction. Namely, because I wasn't interested in being filmed in the Korean version of "Cops" by proving this dog up and having it chase me. No as I walking back from the direction from whence I came, I turned my head to see if the dog was following me. Taking a hard swallow I said "Yep, it's right there."
To give this creature its proper respect I took the time do some research and find out more it. The dog that chased me a Jindo dog, this Korean breed of dog looks like a half wolf and half dog. The Jindo is known to be very fierce, strong, agile, loyal and ridiculously territorial. This would seem to be a perfect dog that I would honestly consider purchasing when I return to the states but I realized yesterday two big huge flaws in my inability to read dogs.
Mistake #1 - I forgot that these dogs have ears that rarely ever go down. So you can't really know how they feel until it is too late.
Mistake #2 - I also forgot that even if this dog enters YOUR immediate surroundings it is now THEIR surroundings and your new name is "Kibbles and Bits" - YIKES!
Back to the story...
While I was slowly retreating back down the alley I honestly wanted to give this little fella a chance. I slowed my pace down to a stop and put my hands out. With palms exposed I wanted the dog to understand I meant it no harm so he could smell me and be on its way. But as I extended my hands the dog quickly went from a playfully panting to snarling and growling. At this moment I could have kicked myself for letting this dog come even closer to me but now all I could to do was ease backwards and figure out what to do next.
My options were simple: Fight or Run. I hated the thought of running because I didn't want to be in a situation where I was slower than the dog and all my energy would be wasted from my frantic escape with nothing left to defend myself. However since I didn't see any rocks, large sticks, baseball bats or katanas lying around I resorted to my orginal plan of chancing a foot race with the Jindo. The first thing I thought while trying to set a new Olympic speed record was to try and lose the dog by running up some stairs. I quickly tossed the idea after thinking that the dog would be smart enough to chase me up the stairs and corner me.
I remember very vividly that the only thing that I wanted to do was yell for Help. But I thought that was stupid because I was in South Korea where they speak a different language. I might as well have screamed out "Chicken Sandwich, Chicken Sandwich, Chicken Sandwich!" while being chased by this super wolf-dog. So in a literal mad dash of desperation I jumped on top of a car and then jumped onto the roof of a house. After that I made my way to the next street via roof top and ran home.
Sorry Fido, but I am way too broke for Rabies Shots.
Granted that I am happy that I got away unscathed it is unfortunate that I didn't really learn anything from this. Because knowing myself I will probably get bored running a shorter track and end up meeting this dog again sometime in the near future. What I did learn, however, is never deplete yourself while working out because you never know when you'll need that last little bit to get you out of a jam!

Viennese Coffee - Food Review
I was in the Digital Media City this weekend and I decided to try out this restaurant. I am sure they have been around for a while since everything is pretty much streamlined and standardized but I'd thought that it would be nice to throw in a quick food review.
The layout of this cafe is pretty much small. If you are familiar with "Holly's Coffee" you are looking at about only a third of that dining space. Yeah, pretty cramped. But here are some pictures of the inside:
Although the small size of this establishment ensures two things that ANYONE would like. First you know that your service will always be fast. Since there is not enough seats to handle a medium size rush of people during the lunch and dinner hours you are garunteed to not be waiting very long for your meal. This is perfect for me because I stopped in for a quick Pick Me Up before I got into full swing of my day. I ordered a small humble and healthy tuna fish sandwich with a glass of water. Which cost me 4,800 won ($3.98 USD).
Nothing special came about this meal or the atmosphere. Everything was just kind of blah. The best thing about this establishment was both the speed that I was served and the cheap cost. But all in all, I got a tasty sandwich for really cheap, really fast.
My First Care Package in Korea!
I am super happy today because I received some much needed supplies from the states. And who is the person responsible? It would be none other than my number 1 fan - Mamma Johnson! I really do appreciate it.
I am aware that to send this box all the way out here cost about 60 bucks and the paperwork to send something like this out here through internal customs is kind of a pain in the ass. So I have nothing but respect for anyone who has the patience to undergo such a trial.
Inside the box was the following:
A bag of Reese's Peanut But Cups! Oh my goodness! Anybody who knows me understands that I am a straight fiend for these. And I haven't been able to find these anywhere in South Korea.
Apparently my mom has been taking some second language courses. At the end she wrote something at the bottom left corner of the box that I couldn't quite make out. I think it's pronounced "Bee Good?" Whatever that means? If anyone understands this can you please let me know, I am anxious to find out!
A tupper ware box filled with confiscated Halloween candy.
A Holy Vial of "Airbourne"
If you don't know about F.R.S. you seriously need to get with it. This was designed for Lance Armstrong to keep his energy up during his workouts. In short it's like a Healthy Version of a Red Bull.
And Mixed in here is enough Theraflu, Emergen-C, Immuni-C, and Alka-Seltzer to last me for an entire life time.
Here is the tricky part. Now I have to go into town and buy my mom some nice souvenirs and send them back to her. So please if you have any suggestions feel free to leave them in the comments. And this goes for anybody. If you send me a care package I promise to send you something back! If you want my address send me and email and I will get you the information.
Teacher Frustration (Video)
Here is a quick little video that took waaaay to long to shoot. However I am pleased with the results. The following is a dedication to ALL the teachers around the WORLD who have to put up and deal with the pangs of being a teacher. Just know that someone out there gets you!
Kevin Steele returns to antagonize Joey in another edition of Green Like a Stop Sign. After Joey legitimately thinks Kevin will help him with his teaching woes he is foiled by Kevin's plot to embarrass him on television. Enjoy!!
Here are some of the stills from the video and of the cast:

Ohh You
I was in Hongdae the other day enjoying another weekend when I came across this little gem. At first I thought it said "Condominiums." You know as in the action to rent out condominiums. However the idea and the image did not fit so I literally stopped in front of the store and re-read the store slogan. CON-DO-MANIA...wait! Hahaha Boy was I wrong.
Granted that I am a grown ass man and I should not be tickled by such things what struck me as hilarious was the environment in which I observed this shop. Granted if I was back in the states if I had saw this store on the street I probably wouldn't laugh. Hell I probably wouldn't even laugh. Simply because Americans are open to both discussing and advertising Sex at every opportunity. But seeing this store in South Korea, where the society is at Code Threat Level Orange on Sexual Prudence it made laugh of how it caught me off guard. Korean culture and social norms are mainly homogeneous. Meaning they work and thrive on collective cohesion and any deviation for their set ways is generally frowned upon. Seriously I have learned that there is little tolerance to interracial dating and marriage. Let alone open discussions about sex.
So taking that all into account, when I saw this little store I laughed not because what was inside the store but of the bold statement that it was making. So to all of you in South Korea trying to break the social mold and to the awkward little Codomania stores that are shaking things up, keep on keeping on!

Dear Mr and Mrs Faux-Revolutionary
...please BE QUIET!! I have noticed that lately a lot of my friends have been on this Pro-Revolutionary tip. Normally this wouldn't bother me but your playful fads are now no longer tolerable at this point. I would like to use this entry to explain something to you so as to negate your impudence while drawing a line in the metaphorical sand of what separates "me" from "you".
Please don't throw numbers. I enjoy the fact that you can easily place numbers and statistics in the midst of your imprudent and ill-perceptive rants without posting any citation to legitimately back your claims. But what do I care, I am sure that Maxim and Vanity Fair Magazine have the 411 on Social Economic stability and the Inequitable Divide concerning the dwindling Middle Class. Hey I get my Health advise from reading National Geographic so who am I to judge?
Unlike a majority of readers in the world I just don't skim through an article and take out what I want to hear (Selective Perception has never been my thing)I really do read the entirety of your work and sit and focus on the bigger picture. Although, I was greatly dissapointed when someone uttered the following:
...for anyone between the years 17 - 25 the current unemployment rate is up to 47%. While just under 10% of new college graduates will actually get a job remotely related to their degree due to America's current economic crisis... but what is guaranteed is that they will certainly be in debt
Like every other unpolished novice who thinks they have something important to say, you use the EXACT same tactics to deliver your message as those industries whom you vehemently try to fight to not be like. Plus 10% of what? Was it 10% of the 13% of individuals from a previous study? Some of us know how to read graphs and would like that WHOLE picture please, Thanks!
Your originality does not go without merit though. I know it's hard to have people want to listen to your incessant diatribes about this, that, and the third. The biggest problem I have with this is your use of "Shock-value" to get your message across. Trust me, if you have to result to this ubiquitous stage trick than you really don't have anything worth hearing or reading about. And please don't pester me with your persistence. By forcing me to listen to you tell me how WRONG I am is only going to make your job that much harder, as you further alienate yourself from your target audience.
This is always a interesting position because you only give yourself two options at this point. You either be quiet at the lack of responses or you resort to doing more extravagantly dangerous methods to up your shock value, which will probably land you in prison for bombing a bank to make statement about How Unfair the IMF is and the current condition of our countries GDP. Because in the end we all know how much SOCIAL CHANGE you can bring about while in jail.
Being deemed a "Revolutionary" or a "Revolutionary Thinker" is a title that come through exhibiting a unique and charismatic character. This title doesn't belong to you or your acerbic self-righteous buddies who sit around and bitch and write internet posts and debate foreign policy through infantile conjecture at some drab unconventional coffee house. Last time I checked when did YOU own any of the Modes of Control that determines the economic balance between social classes?
If you must make a point that is about collective well being of your fellow man, please share your knowledge. But do not condemn people for NOT knowing and do not get offensive if people are not ready to hear what you have to say. Many people who live in certain societies have been conditioned differently; which with determine how open they will be in either accepting your message or throwing it out altogether. Many of humans greatest achievements and collective strides were brought on by revolutionaries ability and discipline and tenacity to stay their ground and guide us when we needed them in times of strife and uncertainty.
Sorry I had to bear my teeth but it is necessary to show you where I stand on this particular topic. Which for the record is on the opposite side, not adjacent. I have too many things on my mind in terms of reconstruction of true and vivid agency and autonomy not for people but for multiple persons to live in a society with a proper blend of Subjective and Objective social control to have you running around undoing what I have done thus far. So with that I bid our false revolutionary fan club adieu. Please get your feet off my couch and gather your things because your visit to Chez Revolution is overstayed and I have much work to do.
